NAME: Ignis Scientia
CANON: Final Fantasy XV
AGE: 22
CANON POINT: Pre-Chapter 9

HISTORY: Wiki-Link!
PERSONALITY: Ignis is the kind of guy you can count on to have his shit together. He's serious, composed, analytical, and generally unflappable: a true Battle Butler type. The Posh Spice of the group, you could say. He's someone whose personality is easily defined by the roles he plays for those closest to him: generally that of an adviser and tactician, as well as a caretaker of sorts.

For the most part, he fills the role of the team's adviser. He tends to take a guiding attitude to those around him. He'll offer help and suggestions, work on keeping the team on track and focused, keep the books and take care of the driving. In numerous dialogue options, the player has the option of simply deferring to Ignis, letting him take care of whatever situation has arisen and give his suggestions. He's someone who has, for most of his life, been expected to get things done and produce results, and he strives to do just that. Aiding him is his perfectionist tendencies: expecting the most from himself and from those around him, and even stating in game that he hates the slightest bit of ambiguity in things. (The example given in game is how he wears glasses, even when his vision is fine enough without them.)

Really, sometimes he's together to the point of being fussy-- another example regarding his glasses is a scene in game where he has Noctis help him track down a wild Chocobo that had stolen them. Sure, he has spare pairs, but he'll be damned if a giant bird makes off with his things. He's so used to having everything slot together perfectly and according to his plan and expectations, that when things don't go right he tends to get a bit irritated and huffy.

In the pre-game anime 'Brotherhood' we see these tendencies clash with Noctis's more laid-back demeanor: five years pre-game, Ignis attends council meetings in Noct's stead, takes notes and makes summaries for him of political and military situations… which of course go summarily ignored, even as Ignis goes above and beyond to scrub Noct's apartment for him, buy him groceries, and cook him lunch because the young royal has some sort of inability to take care of himself. (Maybe 15 year olds shouldn't be living on their own, but hey, whatever.) As mentioned above, he gets frustrated when these efforts go ignored, as though all wasted.

This example of the episode, though, brings up another one of his roles in canon: that of a caretaker to his friends. Ignis is, for one, the only member of the team who can actually cook and takes it upon himself to ensure that the rest of the team is looked after and actually eats something decent. He keeps the books and inventory, he makes suggestions to avoid suicidal runs into the night, and generally acts as Roadtrip Mom. This includes the occasional scolding, of course, as well as trying to keep the group on track: when the younger members want to stop and get drinks, he chides them that it's a waste of time and money, he fat-shames Prompto a little for wanting to eat at a greasy diner, he makes snide comments about various complaints the team has.

He truly does wish the best for those he looks after, and sometimes that, combined with his wish to be a constant support and guiding force, can make things difficult. The most immediate example that comes time mind is a scene early in the game: after the Fall of Insomnia. Their home has been attacked and razed, Noctis's father is dead (and, by extension, that means Gladio's is as well,), and the well-being of the rest of their loved ones is unknown. Their world is suddenly thrown into chaos, and he has to somehow bring this news to Noctis, and battle with the dual compulsions to provide support and care and tend to his best friend, but also to serve him as an adviser to the crown, keeping him on task and moving logically.

That sort of dichotomy is what makes up Ignis in essence: a need to do things pristinely and perfectly, to follow reason and logic to the inevitable result, but also the want and need to look after his friends physical and emotional well-being. (Even if he's… not great with emotional things. According to director interviews, he has difficulty inferring what people mean at times, especially when it's a joke.)

Now, it's impossible to truly explain Ignis's personality without getting into Noctis and what the Prince means to him. As a child, Ignis swore to always stay by his side, and my god was he fucking serious about it. Noctis is the catalyst that can throw everything about him out the window and shift his focus entirely. The best example of this is in the Ignis's DLC Episode: it takes place after the canonpoint I'm choosing to pull Ignis from, but the facets of his personality are still there. Regardless, the focus of the DLC is that Noct is in trouble, and Ignis abandons everything else to recklessly go after him. He doesn't check in with the rest of the team, he doesn't wait for backup, he commandeers a boat that was supposed to be used to help civilian refugees evacuate, he tries to take on several battalions of soldiers, an enemy general, the high-commander of the enemy forces, and the chancellor of the empire all on his own, because Noctis Needs Him. To top it all of, he willingly puts on the Ring of the Lucii, a plot macguffin that has a well-known tendency to outright immolate anyone who tries to use it that isn't of royal blood.

All of these decisions are absolutely insane, but they were the cards he had in hand, and the actions he could take right now when it came to saving Noctis. One of the most damning moments, though, comes post-credits in the DLC: After Ignis learns that Noctis will die, should they continue, he urges Noct to consider giving up. Knowing the world will be enveloped in darkness if they don't continue, but Noct will die if they do, he suggests they stop their journey and go home before they lose even more. It's absolutely selfish and not thought out beyond the most basic emotional response of not wanting to lose the most important person in his life.

As a summary: Ignis is cool, competent, kind of sassy, well-intentioned, nurturing, analytical and intelligent, and will absolutely throw anything away, including and especially himself, when it comes to the defense or service of his King.
CRAU: N/A

SPECIES: Human!
APPEARANCE: he's basically a fashionable cockatiel
SKILLS: Fighting with daggers, lances (And, occasionally during Noct's Armiger attacks, also katanas and maces, to name a few,)- We also see Ignis training with a sword during the pre-game anime, when he was 17. He's been trained as a tactician and staff officer for the monarchy, can drive cars and boats and flying cars(this canon is wacky), he's skilled at riding chocobos, capable of ridiculous gymnastics during a fight including handsprings and cartwheels, and he has damn good accuracy with throwing weapons, like his knives. Basically he's just an all-around Extra human being. (There is a gif somewhere of him throwing a dagger up into the air, and then doing a roundhouse kick that collides with the dagger on the descent and knocks it into an enemy. It's dumb. This game is dumb.)

ALSO: U WANNA TALK ABOUT COOKING A MEAN OMELETTE. AND A MEAN EVERYTHING ELSE. Ignis is one hell of a chef, ok, it's his special ability in canon.

NEW POWER: Flame-Manipulation! It would start small: the ability to manipulate flames that already exist, limited by proximity and intent and the size of the flame. (Think being able to coax a flame to hop a short distance from one candle to another, or to change the shape of it, or encourage it to stop burning up something, if the fire was weak enough.) He'd need to be close, and focusing on it to project the intent. (And he'd probably use a lot of hand gestures for it, just because that's an easy way to sort of wordlessly communicate, and would keep his hands closer to the flame as he did it.)

Eventually, I'd like to increase his ability's power in terms of range and amount of flame to control, and possibly far later gain the ability to generate it regardless of fuel. Think fire-walls for defense and projectile flame-bolts for offense in its final form.

REVISIONS:
Per Mod suggestion, Ignis's ability will be Fire Boundary, the ability to complete isolate flames from other matter. In the beginning, this is only possible for small flames, such as that from a lighter, match, or candle, allowing him to contain them for whatever purpose may be needed.

POWER REASONING: his name literally means fire science what more do you want. Aside from being the element most strongly associated with him in canon, fire is something that both nurtures survival through warmth and cooking and creation, and ruthlessly destroys- which fits quite nicely with Ignis's careful tending to the well-being of his allies and the ruthless, reckless destruction of enemies we see from him when it becomes necessary.
